Rod began his career in fire investigation with the Jefferson County Police Department (JCPD). He served with the Arson Unit from 1986 until retirement in 1999. During his career with the JCPD he was responsible for investigating fire losses for 22 suburban fire departments.
After retirement from JCPD in 1999 Rod continued his fire investigation career with a forensic engineering firm investigating fire losses for insurance companies and law firms serving a multi-state area, including Kentucky and Indiana, until retiring from that firm in 2014.
In 2015 Rod partnered with Henry Ott (retired Major, Louisville Metro Arson Unit) forming Fire and Investigative Consultants, LLC (FIC) to provide fire investigation and consulting services in Kentucky and Indiana.
Rod is a certified fire investigator (CFI) with International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), certified fire and explosion investigator (CFEI) with National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI), and certified vehicle fire investigator (CVFI) with NAFI. Rod’s expertise includes fire investigations involving single-family dwellings, multi-family dwellings, commercial structures, vehicles, heavy equipment, and farm implements.
During his total career, Rod has investigated approximately 4,000 losses. Rod received his Bachelor of Science degree in Police Administration from the University of Louisville and frequently pursues continuing education opportunities related to fire investigation.
